about

I had a dream in which a cryptic phrase was repeated over and over again, by no one in particular that I can remember, just sort of out in the ether - that phrase was "tell them to a lone witch". I wrote it down as soon as I woke up. Although I didn't know what it meant at first, I became obsessed with it. It was a command, after all. For days, I racked my brain wondering what it could be referring to. Who is this lone witch? What is it I'm telling her? Troubles? No. Secrets? No. I started thinking about what was going on in my life and realized I'd been getting frustrated with people making excuses, and I thought, that's it! Excuses. 'Tell them to a lone witch' feels poised, resolute, as if to say: go ahead, try your luck in exile - exile right here in the treachery of your stillness. I am moving on and you will be left behind with no one but the lone witch to lend you her ears. This is as much a reminder to myself to remain honest and motivated as it is a rebuke to anyone else. It is about motion as mantra: forward, forward, forward, despite little means, imperfect knowledge, or scant support. Soon that toxic, squawking inertia will be too far back to hear at all.

lyrics

tell them to a lone witch
grope your last poison window, leash your crosses
no more cutting deals with mirrors
squeezing out your square tears

sometimes a fist is said
gone are the days of blaming friends and famine
sometimes a fist is said to your neighbor
no more sucking safety favors

excuses excuses
learn to dream in cardboard boxes
glut of rusted reasons
tell them to a lone witch

sometimes a fist is said
gone are the days of blaming friends and famine
sometimes a fist is said to your neighbor
no more sucking safety favors

the grip is let
out of the hand falls a crumpled cloud
I'm not ashamed
cause motion is my rosary

sometimes a fist is said
gone are the days of blaming friends and famine
sometimes a fist is said to your neighbor (sometimes)
no more sucking safety favors
