A writer, particularly one with an enthusiasm for Buddhism and eastern philosophy like myself, has a certain dysfunctional, conflicted, lopsided relationship with Silence - a bit of an unrequited love. She, the mute muse, is being and possibility itself. She says it all with effortless wisdom, truth, and grace. He worships the infallibility of Silence, yet feels compelled to speak. However, as soon as the bumbling poet tries to translate reality, although he may get bits and pieces of the message across, it is always mysteriously corrupted. She looks down on him with alternating contempt, pity, and sometimes even faint endearment, and so he lives with an inferiority complex. Does he injure the moment in trying to describe it? Is this inevitable? Well, language is essentially lo-fi; much of the subtle complexity of experience is lost in translation, but there is both a crude charm and precious utility about what comes through that is undeniable. So is the effort to communicate noble enough in itself, even though we can never accurately transcribe the riches of silence? Are these distorted transmissions actually our best tools to bring about compassion and understanding?

nothing wakes you like a mistake
even his face looks like it's running away from him
ain't it gorgeous?

though the magic isn't mutual he accepts it
she's always claiming names are for the nowless
ain't it gorgeous? ain't she gorgeous, zero?

approximation is an insult
every word he knows is no
heaven gnaws at your heels
forgive him gorgeous zero

he knows his language is the lesser darling
she'll admit sometimes his gilded crimes
are just a little bit charming
ain't it gorgeous? ain't she gorgeous, zero?

approximation is an insult
every word he knows is no
let him gnaw at your heels
forgive him gorgeous zero
though he knows exactly what he does

let shadows limp and blood run backwards
we will all be silent after
ain't it gorgeous?
